Although I have already raised 4 children, I still have one young teen left in the house. Now that I am older and have more experience, I thought that I would write down some pointers for my teenaged daughter.

Boyfriends
What do you do about a teen daughter's boyfriend that seems to be mr. nice and wonderful, and then one day out of the blue, he starts making your daughter feel bad? There have been times when I found myself wanting to go and get him by the ear and give him a piece of my mind, but of course, I cannot do that. What I am thankful for is that she talks to me and I listen to what she has to say about it. I give her my opinion, but I don't tell her what she HAS to do, because I know that she will turn away from it. At this stage of being a teen, she is struggling to become an adult. I want her to know what IS acceptable in a relationship and what ISN'T, but without being too overbearing. I hate seeing my daughter cry because the boy has said something ugly to her or making her feel that she did something wrong. Keeping my eyes open for any signs of anything wrong, I am here for my lovely daughter. Being a mother of a teen is certainly challenging.

Bringing Home A Boy
What happens when your sweet darling baby girl suddenly shows signs of interest in boys? After all those years of her playing with dolls, riding bikes, taking on interests of anything but boys, and now suddenly, she is growing......getting taller, showing signs of growing into a young lady and wow, the next thing you know, she wants to bring a boy home after school so you can meet him. In our case, her first encounters started with her wanting to meet him at the mall. I was so afraid because once they get into that boy stage, beware! I have already raised 2 daughters and I knew what was headed in my direction next. I allowed her to go to the mall but she had to have a friend with her, someone that I knew already. That worked out wonderfully because she knew that once I dropped her off, she was not allowed to leave. Good thing here too was that he couldn't drive and turns out, his mother stayed at the mall to shop while he was there. I am very lucky, I have to admit, that his mother and dad are very caring, consiencious people. Letting your daughter go out these days has to be thought out about carefully. I have not allowed her to go to any "parties at so-and-so's house". I have let her go places but with friends of hers that I know, and know their families as well. What works for you with your daughters? Anybody got anything they would like to add here? I welcome your comments!

Oh, Boys !!!
Even though my daughter doesn't have a special guy right now (thank goodness), she has had a small taste of having a special guy. She is going to stand up in her best friend's quinceanera next weekend. She was going to have that special guy stand in with her, and he even went to some practices with her, and then he decided that he was just way too busy, not only for the dance practice, but for my daughter. Good riddence I said. However, that left her without a dance partner so they found her someone. She doesn't know him but they are only going to dance together. This concludes my thoughts on my own daughter's quinceanera which will be coming up in August: No boyfriends. That's right. The girls in her dance party will have to dance with either a good friend, or someone that my daughter picks. As far as her escort goes, she also is going to be picking a good friend. I told her that it's better to pick someone she knows that she can rely on, instead of picking a so-called boyfriend who may back out at the last minute. I know that's going to make the planning go a little smoother now !

that dreaded subject of boys !!!
This is a topic that is very hard to have to deal with for me, as I got married the first time when I was only 17. Heck, back in my time, it was ok to do that, plus, I was raised with the notion that you got married to be a housewife and there were very little divorces. Wow... times have really changed. I raised my older 2 girls to be able to stand on their own 2 feet, without a man, if need be and to be able to support themselves however, when I raised them, marriage was still pretty much the way to go. Today is even more liberal. Today's women are much more free.
Here is my advice to my daughter on boys.
1. Don't date until you are ready.
2. Don't let him tell you what to do, push you around or make ugly comments towards you... because that is NOT okay.
3. Don't get serious with a guy who doesn't have a job and a car. Now, I am talking about the ones that are old enough of course, and that especially means that if they don't have the money to take you out, you should not have to pay for all the dates.
4. Don't let a guy make you feel like you should do something because he wants you to do it and if it's uncomfortable to you, then don't.
5. Always follow that gut feeling inside...it's actually telling you something.
6. Don't get involved in a guy who does things you are against because that will always cause a riff.
7. Don't fall for every line. Alot of it is a crock. Young men are not ready to settle down yet.
8. Treat a guy how you would like to be treated. And if you don't get that same treatment back then he's not worth it.
9. Not every boyfriend will work out. You will go through alot of trial and error while dating, which is a good thing, so you can find out what you want for your future.
10. Think long and hard before you go out and have sex or do something that you will regret.
oh man, I think that's it for today. This is a subject that I could probably write a book about. I have made so many mistakes in my past, and Thank goodness, I can still write about it.
